This position is responsible for the timely development and implementation of process improvement initiatives, in accordance with corporate and plant business goals and strategies. The incumbent will provide technical support to the Operations group through process trouble shooting and optimization initiatives.
The initial major initiative for this new role will relate to logistics and supply chain with a focus on reducing the production of aged inventory resulting from over production or under shipment. Additional points of focus will be on warehouse inventory management: inventory levels, FIFO, accuracy, flow, staffing etc.
Responsibilities:
- Establish what the most efficient inventory level should be for both the corrugated division & Supply & Inventory Management Group SIMG (previously Supply Chain).
- Eliminate, monitor, and control sources of excess production that is eventually scrapped:
- Scheduling – establish logic behind the % added to each production order
- Corrugating – splice monitoring, use of and generation of open/butt rolls, and compliance to notifying planning and adding extra lineal to orders when quality issues are known
- Daily monitoring of production overruns, inquiring with sales and customer service to increase order quantities for deliveries that day that have inventory above order quantity.
- Develop DOMO cards and monitor shipping compliance:
- When inventory is applied to an order to ensure the order is shipped with all inventory
- Ensure shipping plans and delivers up to max allowed when inventory is available
- Confirm, validate, and monitor stocking programs (min, max, EOQ, turns) and adjust for fluctuations ensuring usage reductions are caught immediately and obsolete inventory minimized. This will apply to both the corrugated division & Supply & Inventory Management Group SIMG
- Develop DOMO cards to monitor the stocking program (basically a live version of the monthly report currently available)
- Work with VP Supply Chain to ensure stock programs are priced appropriately
- Monthly update of inventory KPIs & inclusion/presentation at monthly operations reviews
- Aged inventory trends
- Aged inventory scrap value
- Shipping compliance when inventory is applied and shipping to max
- Provide guidance and recommendations for warehouse utilization and organization (aisles, hours, layout, max levels, racking, etc.)
- Work with the shipping staff to ensure a FIFO process is in place for stocked inventory
- Develop a disposition process for monthly review of aged inventory
- Improve visibility of inventory in the Supply & Inventory Management Group to both msf and units as the current measurement tools use pieces & dollar amount
- Transition the section of the SIMG business that has steady demand/usage to an allocation within the corrugated booking capacity system so that inventory levels can be reduced from current of 10 weeks down to 4 weeks or less
- Root cause inefficiencies within plant processes using continuous improvement methodology; DMAIC, Lean Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc.
- Develop SOPs and One-Point Lessons to be posted and used in the warehouses
- Conduct training sessions with shipping staff on new processes and/or technologies
- Work with C.I. team members to standardize changes and ensure consistency in implementation across plants.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must have an engineering degree from a recognized university
- Strong knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies is recommended
- Must be action-oriented and always looking for ways to challenge the status quo
- Must be organized, detail-oriented and results-driven
- Must have good balance of soft (relationship-building) skills and strong analytical capabilities
- 3-5 years’ experience as an engineer is an asset
- Qualified candidates will have manufacturing experience
- Familiarity with MS Office suite, particularly Microsoft Excel is required
- Individuals must have excellent written and oral communication
- Experience with project management software, preferably Asana, is an asset
