Job Title: General Accountant/Analyst

Reporting To: VP, Finance and Operations

Purpose: To enable detailed, accurate, and clear accounting, budget to actual variance analysis, and financial reporting; to ensure payroll, filings and payables are accurate and filed on time, every time.

Role Summary:

Maternity leave replacement contract position for 15-20 months. Possibility of becoming permanent.

The General Accountant’s role is to:

· enter accurate payable and receivable transactions plus precise journal entries in order to ensure clear accounting and financial reporting (including posting transactions to the correct expense/asset type (account), project, program (class) with detailed descriptions)

· prepare accurate payroll, filings, and vendor payables and ensure they are paid on time, every time (filings include T4s, ROEs, GST, PST, Property Taxes, etc.); carefully manage detailed information re: payroll, insurance, RSPs, and benefits noting nuances re: %FTE, vacation, statutory holiday calculations, etc.

· perform month-, quarter-, and year-end close.

· perform detailed financial review at month-, quarter-, and year-end close.

· prepare monthly and quarterly budget vs. actual reporting by program with variance analysis.

· provide information to auditors for year-end audit, T3010 charity return, and ad hoc grant audits.

· help to identify new initiatives and make recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of financial systems and processes, and assist VP in implementation

· help to identify financial issues as they arise, and provide ad hoc reporting and analysis, as requested

· lead or participate in other approved initiatives or other projects as requested by the Foundation

· support compliance with regulatory and funders’ requirements, efficient and effective production of accurate and reliable financial information and funder reports

· provide support to the programs in budgetary analysis and reporting (monthly and ad hoc budget vs. actual reports)

· comfortable with Information Technology systems

· adhere to the highest levels of security re: the Foundation’s digital and physical assets

· in cooperation with the Program Managers, funders and grantees, as required, assist in preparation of budgets and financial reports for submission to granting agencies

· maintain accurate records on donations and grants

Requirements:

· Post secondary courses or degree related to accounting, perhaps currently working towards a professional designation

· Approximately 2-3 years of progressively evolving accounting work experience.

· Advanced knowledge of Quickbooks, Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word), required; Payworks and Salesforce experience an asset.

· Strong organization skills with the ability to focus, prioritize workload, and meet firm deadlines.

· Attention to detail, with demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Self-motivated, with demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team.

· Comfortable in an evolving, growing organization where everyone may be needed to contribute outside of their specific role.

· Optimistic, collaborative team player with a “can-do” attitude; strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate; communicates effectively, positively and skillfully with individuals at all levels.

Skills and experience considered an asset:

· Strong accounting and financial analysis skills

· Highly numerate with an ability to create and manage variance analyses, forecasting and budget to actual reports

· Excellent organizational skills

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

· Ability to prioritize workload and function effectively within and outside the office in a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary environment

· Ability to work under pressure to complete multiple tasks, meet demands and deadlines with a positive, constructive attitude

· Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters respectfully and in confidence

· Experience in non-profit or similar organizations or environmentally oriented industries, would be a plus!

Knowledge:

· Knowledge of accounting, cash flow, audit and compliance

· Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards

· Knowledge of grant processes, procedures and auditing requirements, would be a bonus

· Understanding of the importance of effective processes and controls to enhance efficiencies and mitigate risk

Mandatory requirements:

Proficient in use of Quickbooks and Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel; Adept with information communications technology commonly used in office applications including Salesforce, Payworks, Shopify, etc.
