Dear Grain is an artisanal bakery that specializes in high hydration sourdough bread and pastries. DG Ossington has been coined our “Sourdough Studio” as it will be a space to share both our greatest hits and our latest experimentations. In addition to our signature sourdough, which arrives freshly baked every morning from our commissary in Hamilton, we offer a seasonal menu of sourdough pastries, specialty coffee from Detour Coffee Roasters, ready-to-eat meals, and a curated selection of wine and grocery items.

Join our small but mighty Ossington team! We are currently looking for a gem who can help lead our wonderful team. With a focus on culture and people, Dear Grain Ossington’s Store Manager will maintain an amazing employee and customer experience, a profitable and growing business and the hold us accountable to the highest quality. Candidates must possess a a positive attitude, strong business sense, natural hospitality and have an innate attention to detail and maintain focus. The successful candidate will be excited at the chance to grow a retail bakery focused hospitality business and embrace the challenges that come along with it.
Who you are: a people person who has a passion for all things delicious, sourdough in particular! Coffee knowledge and barista experience is a must. We can’t wait to break bread with you in the break room, lament over sourdough starter mishaps, bond over playlists and drink (probably too much) coffee.
Working Conditions: The Manager will report to Dear Grain’s General Manager and will work hand-in-hand with the entire executive team. Managers are expected to work full time hours (35-40/wk) in a manner that balances their personal needs against business performance. Weekly schedule fluctuates. Hours are extended when work-load is increased.
Responsibilities
Manage retail staff across the full spectrum of people related functions including hiring, onboarding, training, evaluations and promotions, while upholding a culture that supports the positive development of all!
Engage with the local community as an ambassador with a focus on building positive relationships and enhancing the Dear Grain brand.
Manage financial performance by growing top line sales and controlling key cost categories (labor and COGS)
Act as store-level owner and by trouble shooting issues, filling-in on the floor and supporting crisis management as necessary (this is the hospitality business after all…)
Play a lead role in events at the store by supporting sales, staffing and execution
Act as a bridge between Dear Grain executive and retail staff to execute company-wide objectives and identify new opportunities (both large and small)
Execute Dear Grain policies and process including but not limited to tip allocations, cash management, store cleanliness, ordering, systems (7 shifts & POS), food safety, health & safety, hiring ++++ and make recommendations as to how these systems can be refined and improved
Lead all ordering, inventory management, storage and display related functions in a manner that optimizes waste and top-line sales
Personally deliver outstanding customer service and ensure that all staff members understand how to and are doing the same
Study and understand Dear Grain’s product offering with a specific focus on bread, sourdough and coffee related knowledge
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
A positive ambassador with strong communication skills and a genuine kindness, thoughtfulness and a sense that the glass is always at least half full
Minimum 2 year Management-level experience relating to cafés or food operations
A proven executor that has participated the successful growth of food properties
Experience managing inventory and balancing quality and cost effectively
Well-developed personal brand and a proven ability to build relationships across an industry or sector; connections in Toronto coffee a plus
Comfortable with key hospitality software including POS, scheduling and purchasing systems
Highly accountable and well-organized, with an ability to oversee a team of staff and prioritize multiple projects effectively
An insatiable curiosity and willingness to learn, anchored in a constant pursuit of personal development
Passionate about food, coffee, and committed to offering a stellar customer experience.
Direct and honest communicator; team player.
2 year Barista/coffee making experience required.
Smart Serve & Food Handlers Certification a must.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: $20.00-$22.00 per hour
