About Us
The Western Communications team provides strategic advice to university senior leadership, faculty, staff and teams of internal and external communications staff across Western in order to build the university’s brand on a local, national and global scale.
Responsibilities
The Operations & Finance Manager will assist in advancing the strategic goals of Western and the Department by managing the administrative, financial, human resources and operational functions of the Department. The role will critically review the administrative processes within the Department, and design and implement new processes to support continuous improvement and the management of legal, operational, and financial risks. The role will provide leadership to staff, offering guidance on various administrative processes to ensure that the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) is supported effectively. The Manager will also provide direction and advice to other leaders in the Western Communications portfolio with respect to unprecedented or unusual human resource, finance, or technology challenges, and support the CCO in resolving urgent and unforeseen issues as they arise. The Manager will lead and direct the work of others, ensuring continuity of administrative operations, coach and train staff, and provide comprehensive consultation on a variety of administrative processes to ensure the University community is served effectively.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or other related field
- Completion or working towards Canadian Institute of Management designation, Chartered Professional Accountant and/or Certified Human Resources Professional Designation
Experience:
- 5 years’ administration, human resources, and financial experience in a complex office environment
- Experience managing staff and projects
- Experience in budget planning and analysis, implementation, and operationalization of strategic plans
- Experience in a unionized or public sector environment preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of financial budgeting and accounting principles
- Knowledge of best practices in human resource management
- Knowledge of general office procedures and with best practices for assessing, developing, and implementing new business processes and procedures
- Communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, write clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
- Client service skills with an ability to apply tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues and a range of personalities, motives, and interests
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to take on new challenges
- Ability to remain highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and collaborative when faced with challenges
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Influential interpersonal skills that build positive and strong relationships at all levels of the organization
- Organizational skills to manage multiple assignments that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities
- Problem solving skills with a sense of urgency in resolving issues and getting tasks completed
- Ability to organize and effectively manage financial and human resources needed to achieve results
